DEKALB WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT COLLABORATES WITH GEORGIA POWER

Decatur- DeKalb Workforce Development (DWD), in collaboration with Georgia Power, offers graduating seniors another great opportunity.

The Electrical Line Worker Apprentice Program will prepare youth for entry level employment with Georgia Power.  This innovative program

will provide youth with a wide range of studies, such as, physical science, mechanics, safety and work ethics.  They will also become familiar with workplace skills like communication and problem solving, tools and equipment usage, and the fundamentals of electricity.

The first orientation was held on Saturday, April 12, 2008.  There were 21 youth from all over the Atlanta Metropolitan Area in attendance.  The youth received a program overview, participated in a physical agility test and practiced for the CAST Exam (a required pre-hire assessment test).  This apprenticeship program has many requirements; some of which are:  participants must be 18 by June 1, 2008, have passed all parts of the GHSGT prior to March 1, 2008, be physically fit, complete an essay, and have the desire to train for a career with a starting salary of $30,000 with the potential to earn $70,000.

This will be the second year DWD has worked with this program.  Last year eight youth successfully completed training and were offered employment with Georgia Power. Dannon Lindley and Kamal Oliver, Project Leads, believe that this is a great opportunity for young adults to get started on their professional careers.  Many students are not immediately college bound and an initiative like this with Georgia Power gives those students a chance to earn money and start a foundation with a company that is nationally renowned.

DeKalb Workforce Development serves as the primary liaison for this program.  Through collaborative efforts, other metro counties are afforded the opportunity to participate in this program.  The next orientation will be held at 9:00a.m., Saturday, April 19, 2008.
